A-SONG-A-WEEK

Courtesy of Jenner Fox

TEACHING ARTIST: JENNER FOX
8 SESSIONS >> TUESDAYS, 4/30-6/18 FROM 4-6PM

ONLINE

A-Song-A-Week is an opportunity to explore the medium of songwriting in an inclusive environment with weekly prompts, sharing, and a look at the inner workings of the songs we love. Songs can communicate from the heart. We'll support each other in discovering what that elusive organ might like to say, and above all, we'll be kind to ourselves and hold close the philosophy of poet William Stafford that, "There is no such thing as writer's block for the writer whose standards are low enough."

No previous experience necessary. This class is open to both Veterans and non-Veterans.

Mask-Making for Invisible Wounds

TEACHING ARTIST: Luz Helena Thompson
8 CLASSES >> Wednesdays, 5/1–6/19 from 2–4PM

Online

This mask making class is an opportunity to explore the person you are, your authentic self. Enjoy the experience of designing and creating a three dimensional mask representing an invisible wound and your journey through recovery. Our class will be a supportive atmosphere where veterans can work as a group, sharing their own insights and hearing the journey of others as we process our personal experiences. You will use a variety of media such as paint, glue, markers and more to explore how art material can visually represent what we are feeling and help us heal from invisible wounds.

WRITING YOUR MEMOIR

TEACHING ARTIST: RAÚL SÁNCHEZ

Everyone has a story to tell––in this class, we will dig deep in our memory bank and we will try to open the secret chamber in our heart to find the good and the bad memories, writing them down.

We will share our writing in a supportive environment and follow prompts to get our creative juices flowing. I asked Sandra Cisneros “What is the best way to write a memoir?” She told me: “Write them as they come, don’t worry about the chronology” We will do the same. Class time will include reading excerpts of memoir writers for inspiration, writing prompts, and sharing work with each other for feedback. No prior writing experience necessary.

This class is open to both Veterans and non-Veterans.

DIY Fridge Magnets

TEACHING ARTIST: DONNA TOUTH'LE BAKER
MATERIALS MAILED TO PARTICIPANTS

This will be a fun and easy DIY fridge magnet art kit project. We will be using mixed media materials such as cardboard, pipe cleaners, acrylic markers, wooden clothespins, felt fabric, thread, and seed beads to secure onto a magnet for your refrigerator or any magnetic surface.

We will have patterns for a few animals and shapes if you would like to create such items. The goal is to create something fun and unique. Clothespins can be used to create people or something outlandish like a fairy or alien. A tutorial will be available to show you how to construct one or two DIY magnets. There will be enough supplies included in your kit to create 2–4 magnets, depending on the size. An included step by step guidebook will inspire possible magnet designs and ideas. Stay positive and attract good vibes, just like a magnet!
