"How did field bands, crewman and burnouts create the sounds of their generations? By finding the patterns in music to tell their stories.
In this beginning theory class, we will break down some of our favorite hits throughout the pop, rock and R&B Diaspora - analyzing the choices (harmony, melody, rhythm), employing the tools (counterpoint, fugues, intervals), and exploring the patterns in each genre to build our own reverent songs. Using digital piano, our instruments of choice, accessible software and our bodies to write songs using the pillars of music theory and the fundaments of music history. No prior music experience necessary––all are welcome."

Participants will engage in a variety of exercises to use physical transformation and vocal specificity to bring a character to life. Together we will find connection to the inner life of a character - their personality, desires, conflicts and all that makes them tick. We will then reflect and journal on how embodying these different characters made us feel and what we learned about ourselves in this process. This is a great class for anyone who is interested in theater, acting, or exploring our sense of self. No prior experience or knowledge of theater is necessary, all are welcome!

No prior art experience is required and this class is perfect for the newcomer to artistic and creative expression.

The Art of Musical Listening
TEACHING ARTIST: Stuart Zobel Fridays, 1-3 pm
February 17 and 24 [2 sessions]
Online
Sifting through the advice of the greatest musicians we find a common theme among all of them. To listen. This seems so simple, yet it is the main obstacle for most people to make great music. Whether the music is loud, soft, aggressive, or meditative, listening is the ingredient that make the music compelling, and what gives the music the power to affect people. We will be looking to science, philosophy, practical exercises, and the musical masters themselves for insight on how to be a good listener.

Working intuitively with only the materials available in your immediate surroundings, we’ll develop a sequence of projects investigating form, construction and site-specific installation, inspired by Surrealist artists and experimental musical composition. We will use our senses to create sculptures and share our fast and fun creations with others through this shared experience centered on belonging in place.
